Hanoi coffee on CNN Travel’s world Top 10
Coffee in Vietnam’s capital impresses with good beans and diverse types. Hanoi has been listed among the top 10 places around the globe with the best coffee by CNN Travel. It describes coffee as “deep in the DNA of Vietnam” and the country is also one of the largest coffee bean producers internationally. “When Vietnam was a French colony, the French established coffee plantations across the country in the late 19th century, and, if you’re in the capital, Hanoi, you don’t have to go far for a fantastic cup,” CNN Travel wrote.
Hanoi is not a place for just a flat white or an Americano but is special for coffee brewed in a traditional filter, dripping into a single cup underneath, producing a thick, intense brew that is sipped black or enjoyed with sweetened condensed milk. It’s something Vietnamese became accustomed to when fresh milk was in short supply.
CNN Travel recommends a “local order” of “ca phe den” (thick black, slow brewed), “ca phe sua” (with condensed milk), or coconut coffee (with frozen coconut milk and shaved coconut ice – which is more of a dessert than a drink).
It also stressed the popularity of “ca phe trung”, or egg coffee, among local people, which has a creamy, meringue-like egg white foam placed on top of a black coffee. It was created by Café Giang on Nguyen Huu Huan Street in Hanoi’s city center and was served to reporters at the international media center during the second US-North Korea summit in Hanoi in February.
The site also recommends well-known cafés such as Café Dinh at 13 Dinh Tien Hoang, Hoan Kiem district, Cafe Duy Tri at 43 Yen Phu in Tay Ho district, and Xofa Cafe & Bistro for a coconut coffee at Tong Duy Tan in Hoan Kiem district.
Other locations around the world on the list are Wellington in New Zealand, Melbourne in Australia, London in the UK, Iceland, Rome in Italy, Singapore, Seattle in the US, Austria, and Nigeria.
